For today’s #meridianmonday post, let’s talk about the direction of flow!
I’ll also tell you how you can use this information at home to balance your energy.
Each meridian has a start and end point in either the hands feet, or head
However a few meridians start or end in the torso. BUT meridians don’t all flow in the same direction.
Unless you’ve thought about it, you probably don’t realise that:
- Meridians flow in specific directions
- They don’t all flow the same direction
The image above shows the start and end points for meridians in the hands and feet.
If you’re looking at a meridian chart that shows the number of each point, the higher number means it’s the end point, and number 1 means it’s the start point.
Meridians flow in pairs according to their element before moving on to the next element.
Why do meridians flow in different directions?
- Meridians work together as a system
- Qi (energy) moves from one meridian to another every 2 hours on the 24 hour meridian clock, in a specific order
- Generally speaking, the direction of flow will move towards the related organ
- It’s a bit like weaving an energy network
- The flow moves in meridian pairs first. For example, Lung to Large Intestine (metal pair) then Stomach to Spleen (earth pair)
- There’s a specific entry and exit point for each meridian allowing the Qi to move to the next meridian
Entry/exit points aren’t always the first or last points!
- Central Vessel: starts in the front of the torso, ends in the head
- Governing Vessel: starts in the back of the torso, ends in the head
Metal
- Lung: starts in the torso, ends in the hand
- Large Intestine: starts in the hand, ends in the head
Earth
- Stomach: starts in the head, ends in the feet
- Spleen: starts in the feet, ends in the torso
Fire
- Heart: starts in the torso, ends in the hand
- Small Intestine: starts in the hand, ends in the head
Water
- Bladder: starts in the head, ends in the feet
- Kidney: starts in the feet, ends in the torso
Fire
- Pericardium: starts in the torso, ends in the hand
- Triple Heater: starts in the hand, ends in the head
Wood
- Gall Bladder: starts in the head, ends in the feet
- Liver: starts in the feet, ends in the torso
Go with the flow!
You can use this information to run or sweep your meridians, which is a basic method of clearing stagnant energy.
You can look up a specific meridian and trace it in both directions several times, ending with a few sweeps in the correct direction (start with the starting point).
You can just work with the meridians that feel like they need some support, or you can work through them all one after the other.
Happy meridian sweeping, and happy Monday!
