Mistakes are proof that you’re trying
So many of my clients live with a fear of failure, and/or the need to give themselves a hard time if they see themselves as having failed.
Most of us need a massive re-frame on the concept of failure and making mistakes…
MISTAKES AREN’T WRONG OR BAD
MISTAKES DON’T MEAN YOU’RE A FAILURE
MISTAKES ARE HOW YOU LEARN!
This is the truth for almost anything you do. You can’t learn how to do something without also getting it wrong.
Failure helps you to understand how to get it right. Here’s a personal example…
Mastering poached eggs
I absolutely LOVE poached eggs! A few years ago, I decided I wanted to learn how to make them at home.
So I Googled, did the research, made sure I had the tools on hand and then I started practicing!
My first attempts were fairly average
Too runny, too hard, too much vinegar in the water, trying to learn how to not break the yolks…and so on.
But I kept persisting. I made poached eggs most mornings for months on end!
Eventually, making poached eggs became a natural skill
I no longer needed a timer to keep track of how long they’d been poaching.
And what’s more, if I do occasionally make a less than perfect poachie? I shrug it off. No big deal!
Mistakes help us navigate our world
And when we make really big mistakes? Well, those ones are ripe with deep learning opportunities!
Embrace your mistakes and all of the learnings that come with them!
